Williams uses Madrid for 2027 at a cost to the present

Williams ended Friday outside the top ten, with Carlos Sainz 16th and Alex Albon 18th in FP2. The team suffered greater-than-expected degradation on the left tyres, while Albon also reported inconsistent energy deployment. Home driver Sainz admitted the car did not look competitive.

Williams is waiting for a major package in Baku and used Madrid practice to test components for its 2027 car. That creates medium-term data but reduces its ability to optimise a weekend where grid position may decide the result.

The long pit lane could offer strategy variations if degradation forces multiple stops. First, Williams must avoid losing both cars in Q1 or it will trade immediate points for benefits that remain unproven.
