Norris gearbox failure puts McLaren behind before qualifying

Lando Norris set no FP2 time after a gearbox problem. Sixth in FP1 and nearly nine tenths behind Russell, the world champion then spent almost the entire second session in the garage. At a new track, every lap teaches lines, bumps and grip evolution, and that knowledge cannot simply be copied from the other car.

Oscar Piastri was seventh in 1m34.200s, 0.538s behind Antonelli. He reported weak rear grip and heavy graining, despite some progress in FP2. McLaren therefore has data but no convincing reference against Mercedes and Ferrari.

Saturday's priority is maximum FP3 mileage for Norris while preparing immediately for qualifying. Walls punish rushed learning and passing looks difficult. Starting behind both Mercedes cars would cost far more than the missed session alone.
