Antonelli puts Mercedes ahead without settling Sunday

Kimi Antonelli led Friday at the Madring with a 1m33.662s lap, 0.113s ahead of Charles Leclerc and 0.149s clear of Lewis Hamilton. Mercedes topped both sessions after George Russell led FP1, although Russell aborted his representative FP2 lap and his fifth place, 0.337s back, understates his potential.

The strongest signal is how quickly the W17 worked at a new circuit. Antonelli found the tyre window at the right time while Ferrari stayed close despite untidy laps. The championship leader also has a 66-point cushion over Russell, allowing him to balance pole ambitions with Sunday.

The uncertainty is race pace. Mercedes found heavy degradation, especially at the front, and Russell reported that overtaking in the long runs was difficult. Grip will keep rising, so a pole-focused set-up may punish the tyres over 57 laps. Mercedes starts as favourite but still has to prove its one-lap speed can survive the race.
