Monza must show the true value of Honda's updated engine

Honda introduced the second specification of its power unit for Aston Martin at Zandvoort. The first outcome disappointed: Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were both eliminated in Q1 in Sprint Qualifying and again in Grand Prix qualifying. Honda mainly identified drivability problems and believes the update’s potential has not yet been fully extracted.

Monza provides a clearer test. Power, energy recovery and torque delivery matter especially because cars spend much of the lap at full throttle before heavy braking. Engineer Shintaro Orihara is promising optimisation, not a new quantified gain.

Aston Martin had already improved its cornering with chassis updates, but a straight-line deficit prevented regular results. If Honda improves drivability without sacrificing available energy, Monza may show a more coherent package.

Strong top speed alone will not prove the engine has caught the leaders. Long-run pace, electrical recharge and reliability also matter. After Zandvoort, the immediate objective is simply to escape Q1 cleanly.
