Antonelli chooses Monza to absorb his engine penalty

Mercedes has confirmed that Kimi Antonelli will take a complete new power unit at the Italian Grand Prix. The championship leader will therefore start towards the back for his home race. The team is not trying to save Monza: its calculations say the calendar, overtaking potential and reliability needs make this the best place to absorb the penalty.

Antonelli arrives on 242 points, 59 ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who both have 183. That margin allows a season-long calculation, but it does not make the race harmless. Lando Norris is 83 points behind and has won two consecutive Grands Prix. A poorly managed recovery, contact or another problem could turn a planned penalty into a much larger loss.

Toto Wolff says Mercedes does not expect to finish the season without exceeding the engine allocation on both cars. Antonelli’s change is therefore preventive, not the result of a failure announced for this weekend. The exact grid drop depends on the components declared, but Formula 1 already says he will start in the rear part of the field.

Monza becomes a management race for the leader and a direct chance for his pursuers. Russell can recover points for Mercedes, while Hamilton and Ferrari have a home opening. Antonelli’s main task is to prevent impatience in traffic from multiplying the calculated cost of the new engine.
