McLaren reaches Monza with far more than a new floor

Lando Norris’s two consecutive wins rest on a series of upgrades, not one part. After a new floor, wakeboards and revised slots in Hungary, McLaren added a rear wing, engine cover, diffuser tweaks and new front rims at Zandvoort. Technical director Neil Houldey says the items deliver gains independently rather than as one indivisible package.

That approach lets the team adapt the car to each circuit without losing every benefit if one component is less suitable. The front rims are intended to retain and transfer more heat to the tyres, while the other changes manage airflow and downforce. McLaren has not published a separate lap-time gain for each item.

Monza asks whether those improvements transfer to a low-drag configuration with long full-throttle sections and heavy braking. Norris’s wins, both from pole, show that peak potential has risen. They do not yet prove the car can dominate every circuit type.

Antonelli’s penalty makes the opportunity obvious, but Russell, Ferrari and Red Bull remain direct benchmarks. Friday will show whether McLaren can preserve the efficiency of its upgrades while trimming downforce for the fastest track on the calendar.
