Antonelli will sacrifice his Monza grid to secure the power unit

Mercedes will fit Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s car with a complete new power unit at Monza, sending the championship leader to the back of the grid. Toto Wolff says team calculations favour the Italian circuit because overtaking is more feasible than at several coming rounds, while the change reduces failure risk after this season’s reliability problems.

The sporting cost is immediate. Antonelli enters his home race 59 points ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who each have 183 points, but gives both rivals a chance to recover part of that margin. Monza has enabled back-to-front drives before, never automatically.

Mercedes is prioritising the whole campaign over the symbolic benefit of a home front row. The exact components changed, final starting position and Antonelli’s ability to clear early traffic will define how expensive that choice becomes.
