Honda changes F1 engine boss in push to accelerate development

Honda is reshuffling the leadership of its Formula 1 power-unit programme. From October 1, Yoichiro Fukao, currently deputy project leader and head of the software division, will replace Tetsushi Kakuda in charge of developing the power unit used by Aston Martin.

Honda describes the move as a planned transition to a new generation of engineers, while also saying it wants to “accelerate” development. The change comes as the manufacturer is still working to close its 2026 performance and reliability deficit. This season is therefore not only about recovery: Honda is already putting in place the organisation expected to deliver a more competitive power unit in 2027.
