Williams kept its drivers; now it must justify their faith

James Vowles admits he feared losing Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon. In comments published by F1 on Monday, he links that concern to Williams’s decline: the team is ninth with 11 points after finishing fifth in 2025. Both drivers are already confirmed for next season; these are not new extensions announced today.

Vowles explains that they were shown internal plans and helped rally the factory. Keeping them provides continuity in the simulator and in assessing changes while the organisation evolves.

That removes the risk of another layer of rebuilding without proving that recovery is secured. The drivers’ faith sends a signal about the project; the car’s competitiveness still has to validate it. The useful measure for Williams will be turning planned improvements into regular results, beyond contractual stability.
