Quartararo refuses to develop Yamaha’s 2027 bike

Fabio Quartararo says he no longer wants to contribute to Yamaha’s development for 2027. His statement, reported by Motorsport.com on Monday, follows the denial of a chance to test the future Pirelli tyres. The Frenchman will join Honda next season; he now distinguishes efforts to improve his current bike from work that would benefit his employer after he leaves. The refusal specifically concerns September’s test at the Red Bull Ring.

The disagreement concerns valuable access. The switch to 850cc machinery also brings a new tyre supplier, and learning those tyres matters to riders. Allowing a departing rider to test can, however, expose technical choices for the future bike. There is no universal ban: Honda and KTM have already let riders bound elsewhere test their 2027 equipment.

At Aragon, Quartararo repeatedly compared chassis and tried a new linkage without finding an improvement. He believes those changes confused his feeling. Yamaha confirms that he finished 18th on Sunday, 51.657 seconds behind the winner, but its report also records mistakes during the race: the gap therefore does not measure the bike’s shortcomings alone.

The announced consequence concerns his future technical cooperation, not an early end to his season or a refusal to race. Yamaha needs to clarify what it still expects from him for 2026 and how it will prepare for 2027 with its other riders.
