McLaren’s progress also came from warming its front tyres

McLaren’s return to winning is not solely about adding downforce. Monday’s analysis of its new front wheels highlights a detail the team confirmed before Zandvoort: the rims were modified to help bring the tyres up to temperature.

The aim is to retain more heat in the wheel and transfer it to the tyre. A more closed wheel cover accompanies the change. A cold front axle lacks grip; correcting that imbalance helps the driver turn into corners without waiting several laps for the car to work properly.

The requirement was different at the rear, where controlling temperature and degradation remained the priority. This was not about heating all four wheels equally. The work accompanies the rear-wing, floor and brake-duct changes presented by McLaren, whose benefits can add up without all the parts depending on one another.

No lap-time gain specific to the rims has been published. Their presence alone cannot explain Norris’s consecutive victories. They do show why effective development combines aerodynamics with tyre operation; its value varies with the circuit and conditions.
