Ferrari must turn its progress into points at Monza

Heading to Monza, Fred Vasseur sees two jobs that must progress together: improving the SF-26 and making full use of its potential. In interviews published on Monday, Ferrari’s team principal defends a bolder approach to technical decisions while acknowledging the need to reduce mistakes across race weekends. Ferrari sits second in the constructors’ championship, with 338 points to Mercedes’ 425.

Hungary and the Netherlands exposed the gap between available performance and results. Ferrari took no podium at either event. In Budapest, Hamilton’s start, a pit-lane speeding penalty and slow stops compromised his opportunities. At Zandvoort, tyre preparation in qualifying also cost positions. A new engine alone cannot fix those losses.

Vasseur believes power-unit management can still cause performance swings of one or two tenths from lap to lap. They are smaller than early in the season, but remain enough to move several cars on a tight grid. The challenge is therefore as much about repeatability as peak performance: having power available where it matters, preparing the tyres correctly and then executing the race plan.

Aerodynamic updates and an upgraded engine are expected in Italy. Their gains have yet to be measured on track. Vasseur also wants to protect the freedom to innovate, despite the cost of taking a wrong direction under the budget cap. He is not promising that every gamble will work; he wants the team to improve its assessment of risk too.

The stakes extend beyond a home victory. Hamilton has 183 points, level with Russell and 59 behind Antonelli. To turn that position into sustained pressure on Mercedes, Ferrari needs technical progress and clean weekends together. Monza will test both, without the arrival of new parts guaranteeing a result.
