Norris believes in the title, but confidence does not mean the car is ready

Lando Norris believes McLaren has much of what it needs to challenge for the title, while acknowledging that weaknesses in the car still need fixing. In his Sky Sports interview, reported by Motorsport.com on Sunday, he describes a race against time. His confidence concerns the team’s ability to improve; it is not a claim that superiority has already been secured.

Wins in Hungary and the Netherlands give that ambition weight. They do not erase the accumulated deficit: Norris is fourth on 159 points, 83 behind Antonelli’s 242. Russell and Hamilton each have 183. McLaren is third in the constructors’ standings with 263 points, 162 behind Mercedes.

Beating Antonelli in one race therefore cannot tell the whole comeback story: Norris needs to take points off him repeatedly and pass the two other drivers still ahead. For the team, the task involves both cars and a different deficit.

That distinction matters approaching Monza. Recent momentum makes a comeback a credible target; it does not mean either the 83-point or the 162-point gap has already disappeared. The next upgrades must extend the performance gain across different circuit types.
