Russell also faces an engine penalty, but Mercedes has not picked a race

Kimi Antonelli’s planned engine penalty at Monza will not be Mercedes’ only sacrifice. Bradley Lord says George Russell will also need to replace components beyond his allocation, but the venue has yet to be settled. The team wants to avoid penalising both cars at the same Grand Prix if possible.

Earlier failures have depleted the supply of usable parts. Antonelli is due to receive a complete power unit and start from the back in Italy. For Russell, incidents in Canada and Hungary weigh on the planning. This is therefore the sporting consequence of replacing equipment, not a disciplinary sanction.

Andrew Shovlin explains that Mercedes expects Monza to offer better recovery opportunities with the 2026 cars: attacking opportunities and energy constraints should make it difficult to defend at every zone. That is the team’s forecast, not a guarantee of easy progress. Traffic, actual pace and incidents could change the cost.

The aim is to absorb these grid losses while Mercedes has a lead in both championships. Staggering the changes also protects the chance of keeping one car well placed. The pending decision concerns Russell’s weekend; no date should be assigned to it prematurely.
