Mercedes accepts a Monza engine penalty to protect Antonelli

Kimi Antonelli will take a grid penalty at the Italian Grand Prix following a planned complete power-unit change. Mercedes selected Monza through its simulations despite the symbolic cost of sending the championship leader down the grid at his home race. Toto Wolff is treating it as a sporting choice: the team would rather absorb the penalty at the circuit it considers most suitable than risk a mechanical problem later.

The championship position makes the calculation possible. After Zandvoort, Antonelli has 242 points and leads George Russell and Lewis Hamilton by 59; the two pursuers are tied on 183 despite racing for Mercedes and Ferrari respectively. That cushion does not make Monza consequence-free, but it gives Mercedes more flexibility than a pursuer would have. Overtaking is also more feasible at Monza than at several remaining tracks, improving the chance to limit the loss.

Two details will matter: the exact starting position once penalties are applied and Antonelli's ability to recover without putting the new hardware at risk. A preventive decision only becomes valuable if it genuinely secures the rest of the season.
