Antonelli takes a cushion and a handicap to Monza

The 59-point figure is not the gap between Antonelli and Norris. It is the championship leader’s advantage over George Russell and Lewis Hamilton after 12 rounds; Norris is fifth, 83 points behind. That cushion gives Mercedes room to make a planned power-unit component change on Antonelli’s car at Monza even though it will trigger a grid penalty.

The calculation is primarily about protecting reliability for the rest of the season. Mercedes would rather exceed the permitted allocation at a circuit with long straights and realistic overtaking opportunities than risk a failure or serve the penalty somewhere less suitable. Antonelli’s points buffer reduces the strategic cost, but it cannot remove first-lap traffic or the risk of losing ground to an improving McLaren.
