Binder had to switch to a ‘Moto2’ map to save fuel

Brad Binder’s sixth place in Austria hides an important technical constraint. Starting 11th, the KTM rider had climbed to fifth and set the third-fastest lap of the race when a fuel warning forced him onto a heavily reduced engine map that he himself compared to a Moto2 setting.

The loss of power allowed Marc Márquez and then Fermín Aldeguer to pass almost immediately. Once Binder had saved enough fuel, he restored more power and began closing again. The episode shows KTM had genuine pace at Spielberg, but also how fuel management can turn several fast laps into a tactical compromise in the middle of a Grand Prix.
