F1 cuts Grand Prix distance to 290 km from 2027

The F1 Commission has approved a reduction in the standard Grand Prix distance from 2027, from 305 to 290 km — roughly two or three laps fewer depending on the circuit. The move accompanies the planned increase in fuel flow under the 2027 power-unit rules, limiting the need for even more energy saving or excessively long races.

The same meeting approved a hard stop time for disrupted races while removing the current three-hour limit from start to finish. The two-hour cap on actual racing remains, and gearbox homologation is also set to disappear in 2027. All of these changes still require approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council.
