Madrid will show whether Mercedes’ Monza one-two was an exception

Mercedes arrives at the Madring after its Antonelli-Russell one-two at Monza and with a 122-point constructors’ lead over Ferrari. Kimi Antonelli also leads George Russell by 66 points. Yet Mercedes itself has described Monza as an outlier and warned that Madrid should be much tougher.

The new layout changes most of what suited Mercedes in Italy: less time at full throttle, more short corners and a low-grip surface. Toto Wolff says the expected profile is closer to Budapest or Zandvoort than Monza.

If the W17 remains the benchmark on this hybrid track, its advantage will look less dependent on long straights and the specific Monza context. If not, Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren will at least learn whether Mercedes’ Italian dominance can be repeated on very different terrain.
