Alpine turns pole into a double points finish

Pierre Gasly could not convert his maiden pole into victory. After a good launch, he lost the lead to Russell on lap two and gradually faded once race pace replaced one-lap performance. He finished seventh, 27.351 seconds behind Antonelli.

Franco Colapinto, who started seventh after penalties were applied, recovered from an off-track moment to finish ninth.

The eight points move Alpine to 62 in the constructors’ standings. The weekend confirms the one-lap potential of the Alpine-Mercedes package in a low-downforce configuration. Gasly also benefited from a tow on his pole lap, but the performance cannot be reduced to that alone: Alpine was competitive throughout qualifying.

The gap to race performance remains clear. Over 53 laps the team could not maintain the same effectiveness against Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull. Even so, the double top-10 finish cuts Alpine’s deficit to fifth-placed Racing Bulls to 13 points.
