Antonelli wins from 19th and reshapes the Mercedes duel

Kimi Antonelli turned a power-unit penalty and 19th on the grid into victory at the Italian Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc’s lap-two crash brought out a red flag with Antonelli already up to 12th. After the restart, the Mercedes driver continued his charge, passing Oscar Piastri, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen before taking the lead from George Russell for the first time on lap 18.

Antonelli had started on hard tyres before switching to mediums during the stoppage, while Russell went onto hards. Mercedes initially asked Antonelli to pause his attacks on his team-mate to build a gap over Verstappen, but did not freeze the order.

The decisive split came under the virtual safety car caused by Lance Stroll stopping. Mercedes pitted Antonelli for a fresh set of mediums while Russell stayed out on his older hards. The call was not presented as a preferred strategy: at that point Mercedes’ simulations still suggested Russell could hold the advantage.

Antonelli had to rebuild the gap after his stop. A trip through the gravel at the first chicane nearly derailed the comeback, but he closed back in and passed Russell four laps from the finish. He won by 3.857 seconds for his seventh victory of the season.

Antonelli moves from 242 to 267 points, with Russell on 201, increasing his championship lead from 59 to 66. He also becomes the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. Winning from 19th is the second-deepest winning grid position in Formula 1 history.
