Formula 1 expands to ten Sprints in 2027, including Monaco

Formula 1 and the FIA have approved a 2027 calendar of 24 Grands Prix in 22 countries, with ten Sprint weekends compared with six in 2026. Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi will host the format for the first time. Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil and Qatar will retain or regain it. In Monaco, that means two qualifying sessions on a circuit where starting position often matters more than race pace.

Portugal returns at Portimao in June and Türkiye at Istanbul in October, the latter subject to FIA circuit homologation. Sprint expansion cuts free-practice time across almost half the season and raises the value of immediate preparation. It also forces teams into more compromises between performance, reliability and accident risk under the cost cap.
