Martin overturns the Sprint and retakes the championship lead

Jorge Martin turned a compromised opening lap into victory in the Austrian Sprint. Starting from pole, the Aprilia rider led into Turn 1 before running wide in his duel with Marc Marquez at the chicane and dropping to eighth. He then passed Binder, Bagnaia, Ogura, Alex Marquez, Bezzecchi and Marc Marquez. Pedro Acosta’s crash, while still holding a lead of about two seconds with three laps remaining, opened first place to him. Martin completed the 14 laps in 20m57.387s, 1.026s ahead of Marquez.

The win followed a 1m27.917s pole, fifteen thousandths ahead of Marquez, and puts Martin alone at the top of the championship with a three-point advantage. The comeback matters as much as the twelve points: the Aprilia allowed him to attack under braking while retaining enough pace after the early effort. Sunday’s Grand Prix starts from the same front row, but with a medium rear expected instead of the soft chosen by most riders in the Sprint. The order can therefore change; Martin’s starting position and ability to rescue a damaged race are already established.
