Colapinto takes out Gasly and Norris and receives a five-place penalty for his next race

Alpine had an opportunity to score with both cars. Instead, it leaves Baku without a point. At the lap 36 restart, Franco Colapinto brakes too late into the first corner, locks his wheels and hits Pierre Gasly. Gasly’s Alpine is then pushed into Lando Norris’ McLaren. All three drivers retire. Colapinto admits his mistake and apologises to his teammate, Norris and his team.

The stewards imposed a ten-second penalty, converted into a five-place grid drop at his next race because he had retired. The decision states that no contribution from another driver justified taking a more lenient approach despite the restart context. The sanction is therefore set to affect his next start at Sepang.

McLaren then loses its final chance of points when Piastri, still running third, locks his wheels into the first corner after the second Safety Car period. He is ultimately classified thirteenth after Gabriel Bortoleto receives a ten-second penalty for overtaking under yellow flags. Alpine and McLaren both leave empty-handed, but for different reasons: a collision between teammates at Alpine; Norris caught up in that crash and then an error by Piastri at McLaren.

For Alpine, the consequence is immediate: Racing Bulls extends its lead from nine to fifteen points thanks to Lindblad’s seventh place. The investigation into the contact between Lindblad and Lawson ended with no further action.
