Russell takes a commanding pole as Antonelli faces a recovery race

George Russell confirmed Thursday’s pace when it mattered most. With a 1:42.526, the Briton secured his fifth pole of the season, leaving Charles Leclerc 0.837 seconds behind. But Mercedes no longer has both cars at the front: Kimi Antonelli ended qualifying in sixteenth place after damaging his suspension against the wall.

Russell described a particularly strong lap, helped on the long straight by a tow from Isack Hadjar. He puts that benefit at one or two tenths: a genuine advantage, but not enough on its own to explain the final margin. He also remains cautious about the race, where the start and interruptions could undermine even such a favourable position.

For Antonelli, everything changed at the first corner during Q1. The championship leader admits he misjudged the grip and struck the inside wall with the front-left corner. His opening time was good enough to reach Q2, but the damage prevented him from taking part. He retains his 81-point lead over Russell before the race; his teammate now has an opportunity to cut that gap.

The race starts this Saturday at 15:00 in Baku, 13:00 in Paris and 07:00 in Ottawa.
